Chapter Fifteen

After the hallway incident, a week and a half went by with no drama. Well, I mean, nothing big at least. I was still being stared at like I’d grown...well, two boobs. Which I had, so it was hard for me to keep getting riled up over it. Actually, I hadn’t been feeling so angry all the time lately. And it wasn’t like things were perfect. McKinley had still refused to talk to me, Alistar and I were ignoring each other outside of meals in the dining hall (keeping the dating lie alive), and I had missed the first game of the season.

Despite all that, I was starting to feel more relaxed than I had in years. No rigorous training schedule; no late-night strategy meetings with the coach; no teammates banging down my door because they needed help with something. The constant strain and stress of needing to be the very best athlete had packed its bags and left. I slept in, I spent more time in the greenhouse working with flowers, and I’d become fully obsessed with music again.

“You’re really good, Mattie.” Alfred was perched on the piano bench while I sat close by with the lute. A smile tugged at my lips as I flipped the sheet music over. It felt amazing to be playing again.

“Yeah, well I used to play a lot before sports took over.” Alfred looked at me for a moment.

“Why did you quit playing?” I blew out a breath and leaned back in the chair.

“No time. I was always good at sports, always enjoyed them, but when I got my growth spurt everything changed. Suddenly I was training every day and everyone was telling me I had the potential to go pro. I was pushed to be the best.”

“Did you want to do that?”

“It was great. Everyone was talking about how good I was. How I had the perfect body. But I had to sacrifice a lot. Everything felt so serious. Like a job instead of a game.” I chuckled. “It wears you down but it’s not the worst job to have.” Alfred listened quietly, soaking in everything I said. He was a good guy and had been a big help in my rediscovering my love of music.

“What did you want to do before sports?” I grinned widely at him.

“Music.” He smiled back at me. “ I wanted to be a big musician singing and playing.”

“You sing?”

“Oh, no.” I snorted. “I’m a horrible singer. It broke my heart when even the voice coach said I was a lost cause.”

“You mean when you were a man.”

“Oh...yeah.”

“Have you tried singing now?” He smiled. He was always doing that smiling and listening and being nice. Of course, it was obvious he had a crush but I liked to think we were good friends too.

“I haven’t, actually.” The thought hadn’t even crossed my mind. I knew I was a bad singer. Well, I mean I had been. Alfred patted the piano bench next to him.

“Come here. I’ll play something, you give it a try.
